Custodial & Maintenance Issues

Here are procedures to follow if you have a concern about a custodial or maintenance issue:

  1. Take care of yourself and your students with regards to any immediate danger.

  2. Communicate the problem to your principal or appropriate administrator in writing or via email. Considering cc'ing your site rep if you use email. If your concern is a maintenance issue (as opposed to a routine custodial matter), request that a Work Order be submitted. The Principal is responsible for determining if a Work Order will be submitted (some minor maintenance issues are handled by custodians). If you are at Berkeley High School, you should use the online Maintenance Form.

  3. Expect a response on the status of the issue within a few days. (You should expect an earlier response in an emergency situation.)

  4. If the concern is a maintenance issue, within 2-3 weeks your principal will receive notice of whether the Work Order has been accepted or rejected. (Work Orders are rejected if they are custodial in nature, or are more about the need for a new project than the maintenance of an existing facility.) If the Work Order has been accepted the principal can request a timeline for the work required.

  5. If you do not receive a response regarding either a custodial or maintenance issue, communicate with your principal again and if it is a maintenance issue ask for the Work Order number. Send an email to BFT (president@berkeleyteachers.org) with the concern and the Work Order number if applicable, or ask your BFT Site Rep to do this for you.

Note: When a part of your school, such as the library or theater, is used in the evenings or weekends, the routine cleaning of classrooms, etc. should generally take place as usual. If you feel there is a consistent pattern of your site being impacted by use of the theater, gym, library, etc. during the evenings or weekends, please contact your principal. If the pattern continues please contact the BFT office at president@berkeleyteachers.org.
